OVERVIEW OF THE ATTAIN BY AETNA®APP

Attain by Aetna is the app that helps you follow your own path to better health. It takes your unique health history, combines it with your wearable device activity, and offers you personalized goals,* achievable actions and motivating rewards.** Find your healthy, with Attain as your guide. The Attain app will give you the opportunity to complete activity goals and healthy actions to earn points. Based on your eligibility, these points can be redeemed for gift cards to popular retailers.

ACHIEVE ACTIVITY GOALS

The Attain app offers personalized daily and weekly activity goals, based on your sex at birth and weight. More than just steps taken, the app also tracks other activities measured by your wearable device like biking, yoga and hiking.

SUSTAIN EVERYDAY HEALTH

You can also earn points for taking actions that improve your overall health. These can include getting more sleep, increasing mindfulness and improving nutrition.

PERSONALIZED NOTIFICATIONS FOR KEY HEALTH MOMENTS

The app uses your health history and activity from your wearable device to recommend personalized health actions. These include reminders to:

  • Meet activity goals
  • Get vaccinations such as the flu shot
  • Schedule regular primary care visits and screenings
  • Refill and pick up prescriptions

The app will also provide support during more serious moments, such as finding lower-cost options for lab and imaging tests like MRIs.

EARN REWARDS

You can earn rewards for meeting your activity goals and completing healthy actions. These rewards can be redeemed to earn gift cards to popular retailers.

Eligibility for particular incentives varies, including by health plan type and location. Download Attain by Aetna and sign in to see which rewards are available to you.

The Attain program is available to Aetna commercial medical members aged 18 and above and with participating plans. Other eligibility and participation requirements, including certain state restrictions and exclusion, may apply.

Participation in Attain requires an iPhone running iOS 14 or higher and an Apple Watch Series 1 or later, or an Android phone running AndroidOS 9 or higher and a Fitbit smartwatch or activity tracker that syncs with the Fitbit app.

Eligibility for particular incentives varies by health plan type and location. Download the Attain app and sign in to see which categories of incentives are available to you based on your health plan.

Simply go to the App Store® or Google Play and download the Attain by Aetna app.

The Attain program combines your health history with the power of your wearable device to help you achieve better health and well-being. A recent RAND corporation study found an increase in activity levels for participants using the rewards platform incorporated in Attain with Apple Watch, compared to those without these incentives – leading to an additional 4.8 days of activity per month.

Your wearable device will:

  • Act as a health and fitness companion throughout the length of the program
  • Motivate you to stay active and healthy by coaching you to achieve your activity targets
  • Measure daily calories burned
  • Track metrics (like exercise minutes) to adapt your experience
  • Deliver notifications such as updates on your progress and ways to earn more points

Participation in the Attain app or the purchase of an Apple Watch through the app does not and will not impact your current health insurance benefits nor any benefits your employer provides you now or in the future.

You can withdraw from the app at any time. However, if you purchased an Apple Watch through the program, you’ll still be responsible for paying off the balance.

Here’s how: In the app, go to Settings>Withdraw from Program. Confirm that you’d like to withdraw, and the program will end. You will no longer be able to sign into Attain and all data collection will stop within three days. If you no longer have access to the app, you can withdraw by calling 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711).

Unfortunately, not. Attain is a program that comes with certain Aetna medical insurance plans. Once your Aetna coverage ends, you’ll no longer be able to use the Attain app, or earn points to cover your Apple Watch payments or redeem for gift cards.

If your new employer has opted to offer Attain to their employees, then yes. Simply log back into Attain using your same Aetna member account username and password once your new Aetna medical plan is active. In most cases, you’ll keep any progress you made previously, including any points earned. If your prior progress doesn’t show up automatically, please contact us and we can help.

Please note that if there's any gap in coverage between your old and new plan, you'll temporarily be unable to access Attain. If you're earning your Apple Watch through Attain, you can continue doing so. Any points you earn will automatically be applied to future monthly payments.

Yes. For instructions, please see this Attain tip sheet (PDF).

SIGNING UP IN THE ATTAIN APP

You just need to log in with your Aetna member user name and password. These are the same credentials you would use to log in to your Aetna member website. Please ensure you are using your own credentials, and not sharing an Aetna member account with another member of your household.

If you don't have an Aetna member account, you can create one in the Attain app or by visiting the Aetna member website. If you have issues creating or resetting your user name or password you can call our Aetna member account help team at 1-800-225-3375 (TTY: 711).

If you have a compatible iPhone, you are welcome to use your current Apple Watch Series 1 or newer or purchase one at any retailer that carries Apple Watch such as Apple’s online store. Compatible iPhones are those running iOS 14 or higher.

To use the Attain app on Android, you must have an Android phone running AndroidOS 9 or higher and a Fitbit smartwatch or activity tracker that syncs with the Fitbit app.

The Attain app only supports pairing an Apple Watch with an iPhone, or a Fitbit smartwatch or activity tracker with an Android phone.

EARNING POINTS

Activity Goals

The Attain app offers personalized daily and weekly activity goals, based on sex at birth and weight. You can hit these goals with a wide range of activities measured by your wearable device. These include biking, yoga, hiking, walking, running and more. The activities that can be tracked by your wearable device may vary.

The Attain app creates daily calorie goals based on your weight and sex at birth at the start of the program. Your goal is to hit your calorie goal each day.

If you have an Apple Watch, activity from your Apple Watch completes these goals. Goals are recalculated when you update your weight in the Apple Health app.

If you have a Fitbit device, activity from your Fitbit device completes these goals, in addition to the calories your Fitbit device is calculating you’ve burned naturally throughout the day. Goals are recalculated when you update your weight in the Fitbit app.

Weekly goals may gradually increase or decrease depending on your achievement. You could be asked to reach your daily goal up to six times a week.

If you have an Apple Watch and the Attain app isn’t counting your daily active calories, it could be because:

  • You’re not sharing Activity data with Attain. Just add access under Sources in the Apple Health app.
  • You didn’t wear your Apple Watch, or it’s not paired.

If you have a Fitbit device and your Attain app isn’t counting your daily calories, it could be because:

  • You’re not sharing Fitbit data with Attain. Visit the Settings menu of the Attain app to enable data sharing from your Fitbit account to Attain.
  • You didn’t wear your Fitbit device, or it’s not synched to your app.

Please note that only activity tracked by your device will be counted, so manually recorded workouts or third-party workout data being synced into your device’s app will not count.

The Attain app calculated your daily calorie goal based on your sex at birth and weight. Your wearable device has its own recommended goal but allows you to set your daily calorie goal as you wish.

The Attain app daily goal is the one you need to achieve to earn points in Attain. We recommend setting your wearable device’s calorie goal to match your daily goal in the Attain app. You can find instructions for the Apple Watch here. To change your calorie goal on your Fitbit device, open the Fitbit app and tap on the calories circle, then click the gear icon.

The activity goals in Attain are designed to help you become more active on a regular basis. If you are underweight and have received direction from your provider to limit your physical activity, please contact our customer service team at 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711) so we can discuss a medical accommodation. Notwithstanding the foregoing, always follow the advice of your doctor.

Attain’s daily calorie goal is based on the way your wearable device records calories. If you use an Apple Watch with Attain, some health and fitness apps integrate with HealthKit to display health data in the Health app, Fitness app, and in the Activity rings on the Apple Watch. Similarly, the Fitbit app allows some health and fitness apps to add workout data to the Fitbit app. Attain does not use the calories collected from other third-party apps because calories burned are estimated differently.

To avoid any confusion, we recommend that Attain users with an Apple Watch not grant third-party apps access to write Active Calories data to HealthKit. This can be controlled in the Health app by going to Summary > User Profile (upper-right corner) > Apps > [app name] > Allow [app name] to write > Change “Active Energy” slider to off (left position).

For Fitbit users, the same can be done within the Fitbit app by tapping on your profile icon -> Third Party Apps -> Manage 3rd Party Apps or within the other app(s) you are allowing to add workout data into the Fitbit app.

When you start exercising, make sure you choose the option that best matches what you are doing on your wearable device. For more info, please read these support articles:

Daily active calorie goals are set up so that you have 24 hours (from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM) in the time zone that you start the day in to complete. For example, if you start your day in PST and then fly travel to EST, you will have until 12 AM PST (or 3 AM EST) to complete your daily goal. Similarly, if you start the day in EST and then fly travel to PST, your daily goal will end at 12 AM EST (or 9 PM PST). To ensure you get credit for your activity goal on a day you are traveling, we encourage you to complete your goal in the morning or keep track of the time zone change on the day you are traveling so you can be sure to crush your goals.

Healthy Actions

The Attain app uses your health history and activity from your wearable device to recommend personalized health actions. Everyday healthy actions include tips and challenges for healthy nutrition habits, activity, sleep and mindfulness. The app also reminds you to get vaccinations such as flu shots, schedule regular primary care visits and screenings and refill and pick up prescriptions. Plus, it supports you during more serious moments, such as finding lower-cost options for lab and imaging tests like MRIs.

If you turned on your notification settings, you’ll receive a notification when you have a healthy action waiting for you. You can also visit the Healthy Actions tab in the Attain app to see what actions you can complete, which are updated daily.

Each healthy action has its own number of allotted points. Go to the Healthy Actions tab to see if you have any healthy actions to complete.

Each healthy action has a different expiration date for completion. Also, some healthy actions are timely, like getting a flu shot before flu season, while others are just for fun and may pop up at any time.

Challenges

The Attain app uses your health history and activity from your wearable device to recommend personalized challenges. Challenges are group-based activities (like steps and workouts) with multiple goal tiers and progress tracking. Each challenge will have three different achievement levels, with more points for each one achieved. All changes are optional and require you to opt-in.

If you turned on your notification settings, you’ll receive a notification when you have a challenge waiting for you. You can also visit the Challenges tab in the Attain app to see what challenges you can complete, which are updated weekly. You can click the pink “I’m in” button to join any challenge.

Opt-in for challenges begin one week before a challenge starts. You may continue to opt in to a challenge after it begins.

The Attain app creates personalized goal targets based on users' activity history. For example, the number of steps a user has taken in previous weeks will determine the appropriate levels for a steps challenge.

Users will be able to track their progress against all users participating in a particular challenge, as well as against those in that challenge with the same goal targets. Users will receive the same goal targets if they have similar activity history.

Each challenge has its own number of allotted points. You will earn the max number of points if you complete all three levels of the challenge. Progress is tracked based on a challenge’s start date, not the date you joined – this means it is possible that you may join and earn points right away! Go to the Challenges tab to see if you have any challenges to complete.

Each challenge has a different expiration date for completion. You may see 1-week, 2-week, and 1-month challenges. Achievement will be back-dated to the challenge start date, so it’s okay if you join a challenge after it’s started.

If you have an Apple Watch and the Attain app isn’t tracking your workouts, it could be because:

  • You’re not sharing Activity data with Attain. Just add access under Sources in the Apple Health app.
  • You didn’t wear your Apple Watch, or it’s not paired to the Attain app.

If you have a Fitbit device and your Attain app isn’t tracking your workouts, it could be because:

  • You’re not sharing Fitbit data with Attain. Visit the Settings menu of the Attain app to enable data sharing from your Fitbit account to Attain.
  • You didn’t wear your Fitbit device, or it’s not synched to your app.

Progress tracking in Attain relies on 1) sharing your activity data, 2) having an activity network connection, and 3) how your wearable records the data type.

1) If you have an Apple Watch and the Attain app isn’t tracking your workouts, it could be because:

  • You’re not sharing Activity data with Attain. Just add access under Sources in the Apple Health app.
  • You didn’t wear your Apple Watch, or it’s not paired to the Attain app.

  • You’re not sharing Fitbit data with Attain. Visit the Settings menu of the Attain app to enable data sharing from your Fitbit account to Attain.
  • You didn’t wear your Fitbit device, or it’s not synched to your app.

2) Please confirm your data use settings and/or connect to an available Wi-Fi network. Once you re-connect to a network, please refresh your app to confirm your data is syncing.

3) Attain’s challenge progress is based on the way your wearable device records the challenge type (e.g. workout minutes, steps taken). If you use an Apple Watch with Attain, some health and fitness apps integrate with HealthKit to display health data in the Health app, Fitness app, and in the Activity rings on the Apple Watch. Attain does not use the data collected from other third-party apps because the data is estimated differently. Access to health data by apps is controlled by the user’s privacy settings.

To avoid any confusion, we recommend that Attain users with an Apple Watch not grant third-party apps access to write Active Calories data to HealthKit. This can be controlled in the Health app by going to Summary > User Profile (upper-right corner) > Apps > [app name] > Allow [app name] to write > Change related sliders to off (left position) (e.g. workouts, walking + running distance, cycling distance).

REWARDS/

USING POINTS

Eligibility for particular incentives varies by health plan type and location, including availability of Apple Watch as a reward. Not all members are eligible to earn an Apple Watch. Download Attain by Aetna and sign in to see which rewards are available to you.

You can earn rewards for meeting your activity goals and completing healthy actions. These rewards can be redeemed to offset the cost of the Apple Watch or for gift cards to popular retailers.

The points you earn are converted to dollars; 1,000 points equal $1.

You can either add a gift code to your Apple Wallet, Google Pay or, if available from the gift card brand, you can redeem the card online or in stores.

Any points you earned while participating in Attain are yours. Once your coverage ends, you’ll have 60 days to redeem your points within the app before losing access.

Rewards earned may be considered taxable income. Please consult your tax adviser if you have any questions regarding the taxability of rewards.

Apple Watch Owners who purchased in the app

Points you earn each month reduce your monthly Apple Watch payment. At the end of every month, the Attain app will assess the points you earned in that month, and if you meet your goals, you will not be charged for your monthly payment. If you don’t hit your goals for any month, the points you did accrue will be applied to your monthly payment, and your credit card will be charged that month for the remaining balance. Initial payment for your Apple Watch must be paid by credit card. After that you can pay by check for any monthly payments you owe.

To find out how many points you must earn to reduce your monthly Apple Watch payment go to the Attain app, click on the Activity tab, click on the down arrow in the top banner, and then click on the ‘i’ with the circle around it.

The first payment is due on the 12th of the month. Monthly payments are triggered at 11:59:59 PM CT. Your initial Apple Watch payment is due at the beginning of the month following your first month with at least four full weeks participating.

Example:

If your Apple Watch is shipped March 2 and received March 10, the first payment will be due on May 12.

Initial payment for your Apple Watch must be paid by credit card. After that you can pay by check for any monthly payments you owe.

Contact our customer service team as soon as possible at 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711).

Please note that you have 14 calendar days from date of delivery to return your Apple Watch. If it’s a convenience return, you pay the shipping cost. If the item is damaged or defective, we will pay that cost.

You can make a return by contacting our customer service team at 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711). You cannot return the Apple Watch directly to Apple at Apple Stores or another retailer.

You can change your credit card information in the app by going to Settings > Update Payment Method, or by calling our customer service team at 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711).

Per the financing agreement you signed when you purchased the Apple Watch, you have two choices:

  1. Continue your monthly payments. You credit card will be charged each month until your Apple Watch is paid off. This will happen automatically, based on your existing financing agreement.
  2. Pay off your remaining Apple Watch balance in full by calling us at 1-833-288-2461 (TTY: 711).

Points are deducted at the end of the first day of each month to be applied to the upcoming monthly watch payment. To ensure all your points are available in your account before that, we recommend opening the Attain app regularly (at least once a week), particularly later in the month. If you have points awarded after the monthly points deduction has already occurred, they can be applied to upcoming months or redeemed for a gift card.
